The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) on 10th October 2019 held a Public Hearing in respect to an Application by the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) for Renewal of its Licenses for Bulk Power Supply, High Voltage Transmission Grid, Power Export and Import, and System Operator. The process of renewing the Licenses involves the setting of new Tariff Performance Targets/Parameters for the period January 2020 to December 2022.
A key issue of concern to stakeholders during the Public Hearing was the relevance of expensive Thermal Power Plants in the Country’s Energy Generation Mix considering that Hydro Power alone produced adequate supply of Electricity.
The Public Hearing presided over by the ERA Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Ziria Tibalwa Waako, was held at the Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala. It was attended by different stakeholders, including: Electricity Consumer Advocacy Groups; Licensees such as Umeme Limited and Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited; Private Contractors; the Media and the general Public.
A final decision on the Application by UETCL will be taken by the Board of the Electricity Regulatory Authority, as provided for by the Electricity Act, 1999, and attendant Regulations.
