Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) took over the electricity distribution and supply operations of Kilembe Investments Limited (KIL) in the areas of Kasese, Rubirizi, Bushenyi, Mitooma, Sheema, and Buhweju on September 30, 2024.
The handover followed the natural end of the KIL license for the Distribution and Supply of Electricity issued by ERA in 2021. The KIL license was not renewed in accordance with the Cabinet directive of October 2022 not to renew all concession agreements and licenses for private distribution companies upon their expiry.
Dr. Patricia Litho, Assistant Commissioner for Communication representing the Minister of Energy, commended KIL for its dedicated service and applauded ERA for its strong regulatory oversight, which has driven significant growth in Uganda’s Electricity Supply Industry over the past two decades.
At the ceremony that took place in Kasese Municipality and attended by among others, representatives of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), UEDCL, KIL, and the media, UEDCL assured attendees of a smooth transition, emphasizing the deployment of modern technology to enhance service delivery and grid monitoring. The company also announced plans to absorb a significant number of KIL’s former employees to ensure continuity and maintain service standards.
