A group of 132 banana farmer’s from Kigarama Sub County in Bushenyi district in Western Uganda formed a cooperative society called Kigarama Matooke Twetungye Cooperative Society Limited (KMTSCL) in the early 1980’s with the main aim of collectively marketing their bananas targeting the vast Kampala market.
In 1985 when the society had grown, there arose a need for members to access financial services for them to mobilize savings from their activities and invest in their gardens to increase production while also diversifying into other activities. The members then resolved to form a microfinance institution called Kigarama Peoples Savings and Credit Association which in 2005 was transformed into a cooperative society called Kigarama Peoples Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Limited (KIPS).
Kigarama Peoples Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Limited (KIPS) was registered on 11th April 2005 as a savings and credit cooperative society under the Cooperative Societies Act of 1991. Its registration number is 7294.
