Managing Menstruation with Dignity: Creating Safer, Healthier Schools for Girls<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

In 40 schools in Mityana and Kassanda districts, managing menstruation at school is no longer a silent struggle for many adolescent girls, thanks to TeamUp Uganda\u2019s targeted interventions.<\/p>

At the heart of this effort is advocacy for\u00a0mainstreaming menstrual hygiene management (MHM)\u00a0and\u00a0sexual reproductive health (SRH)\u00a0education in schools with a mission to ensure every girl has the knowledge, products, and support needed to manage menstruation with dignity, without missing school.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Educating, Empowering, and Engaging<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

A comprehensive approach that blends\u00a0school-based education,\u00a0peer learning, and\u00a0community engagement through interactive sessions each academic term is used to teach adolescents about menstruation, bodily changes, hygiene practices, and reproductive health.<\/p>

To keep the conversations going beyond the classroom,\u00a0peer educators are trained to lead menstrual health discussions with their classmates and foster a culture of openness and support.<\/p>

Parents, teachers, school leaders, health workers, community elders, and local government\u00a0 are also involed through dialogues to\u00a0challenge stigma, break cultural taboos, and build lasting understanding.<\/p>

\u201cWe\u2019re making menstruation something that can be talked about openly, in class, at home, and in the community. Girls are no longer ashamed. They\u2019re asking questions, getting answers, and showing up at school with confidence,\u201d <\/em>Says teacher Aisha Namukuye, Kiggwa Secondary School, Butayunja subcounty, Mityana District.<\/p>

So far, over\u00a01,200 adolescents\u00a0have benefited from TeamUp\u2019s SRH and MHM sessions resulting in:<\/p>

  • Improved menstrual hygiene knowledge<\/li>
  • Reduced stigma and shame<\/li>
  • Increased school attendance\u00a0among girls during their periods<\/li>
  • More supportive peer and teacher networks<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

    Tackling the Gaps<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    Despite the progress, challenges remain. Some schools still\u00a0lack adequate sanitation facilities, and access to\u00a0affordable menstrual products\u00a0is inconsistent. These gaps can still impact girls\u2019 ability to attend and participate fully in school.<\/p>

    The focus is now on\u00a0integrating MHM into school plans, curricula, and budgets, advocating for gender-responsive\u00a0WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene)\u00a0infrastructure and long-term support at the policy level.<\/p>

    Youth groups are supporting then program through producing reusable and affordable menstrual hygiene products and making them accessible to school girls.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
