3rd Annual Microfinance and Savings Groups Conference 2025 – Highlights

The 3rd Annual Microfinance and Savings Groups Conference was successfully held on 10–11 November 2025 at Hotel Africana, Kampala. The event, organised by Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development in partnership with the Association Microfinance Institutions of Microfinance (AMFIU) together with other partners ran under the theme: “Sustainable Financial Inclusion for Environmental, Economic, and Social Impact.”

Building on the progress and shared commitments of the 2022 and 2024 convenings, the 2025 conference focused on how Uganda’s microfinance and savings groups sector can innovate, adapt, and thrive within an evolving national and global landscape. Discussions emphasized alignment with key national frameworks, including NDP III, the Parish Development Model, the Climate Change Policy, and Vision 2040.

The conference brought together a diverse range of actors from across Uganda’s financial ecosystem and beyond to reimagine the future of microfinance and savings groups. The dialogue centered on advancing financial inclusion, promoting green economic transformation, and ensuring socially equitable outcomes for all Ugandans.

Conference Objectives

  1. Advance Sustainable Financial Inclusion: Promote innovative microfinance models and strengthen policy alignment that integrates environmental sustainability and climate resilience, ensuring financial services support green and socially inclusive development.
  2. Foster Sector Innovation and Collaboration: Highlight technological advancements and data-driven solutions for impact measurement, while enhancing cross-sector collaboration to support digital transformation and empower grassroots mechanisms such as Savings Groups.
  3. Harmonize Policy and Strengthen Consumer Protection: Facilitate discussions on regulatory harmonization, assess the effectiveness of government programs, and address consumer protection issues to build a robust, transparent, and fair microfinance environment.

Sub-Themes

The 2025 conference explored three key sub-themes:

  • Responsible Financing (ESG)
  • Technology, Innovation, and Digitalization
  • Policy and Regulation

Sessions were led by expert presenters from across the sector.

The conference attracted over 500 participants, including representatives from Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), SACCOs, Government Ministries and Agencies, Bank of Uganda, Financial institutions engaging in microfinance, Development partners, Fintech companies, Mobile network operators, and other key stakeholders

During the conference stakeholders committed to advancing inclusive, sustainable, and secure financial systems through the following resolutions:

  1. Develop and adopt a National ESG + Resilience Roadmap
  2. Accelerate responsible digital transformation
  3. Strengthen policy and regulatory coordination
  4. Promote financial incentives and inclusion
  5. Enforce cybersecurity and fraud-prevention standards
  6. Expand inclusive partnerships and savings models
